Being Brave and Remain on Adaptation

By : Mdm. Kamariah Derasol

“Urghh, why is no one friendly here? Everyone keeps on minding their own business”

“Wouldn't it be great if someone else understands me”

“It’s so troublesome how I have to follow rules and have to chase for merit, how I can’t do this and can’t do that. I’m a grown up!”

Have you ever whispered these words to yourself? Or have you heard them as complaints from your friends? The truth is, when you step foot on campus, you have to be ready for whatever challenges and discomfort that you would have to face. It’s as if you’re entering a new life episode in which you don’t know what will happen and can cause you to worry. When you have an expectation on something and that expectation is not met, it can cause pressure and stress. Excessive stress could also lead to a restless life. What do you have to do if this occurs? Change your perspective.

Life is full of unexpected elements because we are merely humans, not God. With that way of thinking, every life change won’t bring as much burden or stress on yourself. It doesn’t matter what new situation you find yourself in, or what new things you have to learn, face it with acceptance and an open mind. Allow yourself to discover new experiences so you can enrich yourself with knowledge and experience. Consider every experience you face on campus as a chance for you to embroider priceless life knowledge that can’t be measured with money. With it, you can be more mature and smart in planning for your future journey.

Indeed, discovering new experiences is the spark that lights every dream. Don’t ever forget your roots when chasing a dream and facing all kinds of trials and tribulations. Save all of your parents’ and families' advice close to your heart and soul so you can carve success for yourself. Wherever you go, keep your worth intact. Where the earth is sheltered, there trust is upheld. Knowledge and charity must go hand in hand to keep your heart from being restless.

At times, your heart will feel lonely when you’re away from family. Especially when no one seems to be able to understand you. Take the time to know people and familiarise yourself. If you ever have to be alone, don’t be sad. Being alone is okay, as long as you know how to control yourself. At UPM’s Counselling Division, there’s a choice of 13 counsellors for you to choose to share your troubles and concerns. We are here and ready to accept you as you are and help you find peace and happiness in self-discovery. To find happiness, you have to know who you are and build a life goal that fits your abilities.

A counselling process will help you identify your true self-potential and shine a light on your inner worth. The most important thing to remember is to live by creating your own path and not by following in the shadows of others. Even though sometimes you will encounter people with opposing views, the point is only one.

Celebrate the similarities and respect the differences. This will help you be more at peace with others and yourself. If you have worked hard in considering the feelings and rights of other people but your efforts still went unnoticed, you should let those suffocating feelings go. Don’t put expectations when you give and share kindness and allow God to handle matters. With this, your soul will be free without any ties or disappointment weighing on you. Lastly, Let yourself soak in these phrases to motivate yourself. May you be able to adjust, adapt and not yourself be affected with the new cultures around you. A culture shock can’t affect the soul if the self is ready.
