Building Mental Strength

Written by : Mr. Haniff Abdullah Hashim

Individuals often maintain physical health by exercising, taking care of nutrition, doing health check -ups and so on. Yet many are still confused about how to maintain mental health. One of the mental health care is to strengthen the mental with constant exercise. If human muscles need protein and lifting exercises to build their strength. The mental also needs to practice the rationalization of continuous thinking when faced with a problem or stress. Among the exercises that can be done by individuals are with

1) Avoid self -sabotage behaviors - often times when someone is trying to think rationally and positively. It was also at this point that he engaged in self -sabotaging behaviors by avoiding dealing with problems, being ashamed to voice his opinions, remaining silent, and causing conflict in communication. Try to coordinate between my thoughts and behaviors. In order to get positive, rational and strong thoughts, my behavior must be in line with those thoughts.

2) Stop negative inner words-when there are negative inner words. This thing will always stimulate emotions to always feel sad, self -pity, depressed, restless, uncomfortable and so on. Controlling this is not an easy thing, but it is not impossible. Perhaps this has become a habit in a person, especially an individual who throughout adulthood is full of criticism from family, friends and the environment. Try to have a dialogue with yourself and give yourself confidence. Over time you will build strength from within (internal locus of control) rather than relying on external perception.

3) Be aware of thoughts - often thoughts go out of control and awareness. Thoughts especially automatic negative thoughts (Automatic negative Though) hover in the mind without being controlled and evaluated. Many assume that this thinking is out of control. The fact is that this thought is a script that is played out as a result of observations, perceptions, judgments and summaries of experiences and events that take place within oneself. Arbitrary and questionable thinking will result in confusion and emotional uncertainty. It is therefore important for a person to analyze his or her thoughts, and re -evaluate whether his or her thoughts are conducive to mental strength or contribute to emotional uncertainty.

This is a recommended step in strengthening one's emotional defenses. It is encouraged for individuals to consult with a counselor or authority for further information. Everyone has different challenges, environments and thought patterns. These factors make human beings unique and different triggers to their respective health issues. Therefore, deeply understand the personalities, potentials, interests and factors that can strengthen each other mentally and physically.
