Study 101: Study Smarter not Harder

Do you ever feel like your study habits simply aren’t cutting it? Why are some of our high schools study habits seems to be less effective in university? In order to achieve academic excellence, students need to develop a smart study strategy and stick with it. 

These are several tips of studying that can be implemented into students’ regular study routine to help them to learn more efficiently and effectively.

 

  1. Reading is not studying
  • Simply reading and re-reading text or notes s not actively engaging in the material. Learning informations requires active engagement which is the process of constructing meaning from text that involves making connection to lectures, forming examples and regulation ones own learning.
  1. Understand the study cycle (Frank Christ)
  • Previewing, attending class, reviewing, studying and checking understanding.
  1. It’s good to be intense
  • Ones will accomplish more if they study intensively. Intensive study sessions are short and will allow ones to get work done with minimal wasted effort.
  1. Silence isn’t golden
  • Know where you study best. The silence of the library may not be the best place for you. Consider what noise environment works best for you. Active studying is rarely silent as it often requires saying the material out loud.
  1. Reconsider multitasking
  • Multi-tasking does not improve efficiency and actually negatively affects result. Eliminate distraction during study sessions. (No social media, web browsing, game playing, texting, etc..)
  1. Switch up your setting.
  • Find several places to study, change up your space, know when and where to study best
