SERDANG, 29 June - The Counseling Division of Universiti Putra Malaysia (BKUPM) continues its commitment to strengthening public awareness and understanding of the importance of mental health through the organisation of the Mental Health Awareness Program in collaboration with the Universiti Putra Malaysia Student Representative Council (MPP UPM). The program, held on 8 May 2026 from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., was conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting and streamed live on the BKUPM Facebook Live platform.
The program successfully attracted 3,162 participants, comprising students, university staff, and members of the public. This encouraging response reflects the growing awareness of the importance of maintaining mental well-being and supports the University's aspiration to nurture individuals who are physically, emotionally, and psychologically healthy.
Throughout the program, participants were exposed to the importance of maintaining good mental health as the foundation of overall well-being. They also gained a better understanding of the early signs of mental health issues and the importance of seeking timely treatment and early intervention. The session emphasised that seeking professional psychological support should not be perceived as a sign of weakness but rather as a proactive step towards safeguarding one's mental well-being and improving quality of life.
In addition to enhancing participants' knowledge, the program also played an important role in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and psychological treatment, which continues to exist in society. Participants were introduced to available mental health support services and professional counselling resources that can be accessed when facing emotional distress or life challenges. This approach is expected to encourage more individuals to seek help confidently without fear of judgment or discrimination.
The virtual implementation of the program enabled mental health information to reach a broader audience regardless of geographical location. This initiative reflects BKUPM's ongoing commitment to expanding access to psychological education and mental well-being through inclusive and accessible digital platforms.
Overall, the program successfully achieved its intended objectives by enhancing participants' awareness, understanding, and concern regarding the importance of maintaining good mental health. BKUPM hopes that continuous initiatives of this nature will contribute to building a community that is more informed, compassionate, and proactive in promoting mental well-being, while supporting the University's mission of developing resilient, balanced, and socially responsible individuals.
