CIT CAT PUTRA FM WITH COUNSELORS: NEGATIVE THINKING & EFFECTS ON MENTAL HEALTH

UPM Serdang, 31 July – CIT CAT Putra FM together with UPM Counselors is one of the division's promotional initiatives, whether for the purpose of visibility of BKUPM's Psychology Officer or program promotion. It is also a medium of knowledge transfer from the BKUPM Psychology Officer to all listeners. The topic presented this July was "Negative Thinking & Its Effects on Mental Health" which was presented by the BKUPM counselor, Puan Kemelia binti Omar.

This sharing is carried out on 25 July 2023 Tuesday from 12.00 noon until 1.00 pm on Radio PUTRA FM. Through the counselor's partnership this time, it is hoped to be able to provide a different point of view to all listeners in facing any situation and challenge. The negative thoughts shared this time refer to perceptions, hopes and descriptions of oneself, other people and the environment as a whole followed by negative emotions that will have a negative impact on a person's behavior and health. Sometimes individuals often see things in two categories only (black/white) or (successful/failed). Individuals also often blame or criticize themselves and cannot forgive themselves for any mistakes. This is called negative perception.

There are various reasons why this can happen. It may be the result of past experiences, or when an individual is too worried about the current situation or too worried or afraid of the future.
Negative thoughts can affect emotions if not controlled. If this thinking is consistent, it can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.
If this happens, it affects the individual. Among the effects are difficulties in motivation such as procrastination, laziness, lack of enthusiasm causing performance to decline and not excel. Second, Losses such as time, energy and money. Third, experiencing bigger problems such as not focusing on solving the problem but rather adding to the problem. Fourth, having negative habits such as hot temper, ego, laziness, greed and envy.
UPM people and all listeners what methods can be used to manage negative thoughts? Here are some guidelines or steps that can be taken, which is to keep yourself and your mind busy by doing tasks such as cleaning, organizing, knitting etc. This helps keep the mind away from negative thoughts. Avoid Triggers, minimizing contact with negative people and avoiding negative triggers can help you stay sane and positive. Get some rest, lack of sleep greatly affects your mood, causing you to feel anxious and irritable. Engage in physical activities such as exercise, share feelings such as share your feelings with trusted and positive people such as family members, close friends and counselors. In addition, acceptance or Redha, learning to accept one's shortcomings and be content with anything that cannot be changed and controlled. Lastly Humor is like smiling and laughing.

Through this partnership, BKUPM hopes that all listeners can increase understanding and awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy mind, doing healthy activities and always in a positive and prosperous state so that we can all stay away from negative things that can affect mental health.
