SERDANG, 28 July - A Case Conference under PEKERTI@UPM 2025 entitled “The Role of Counselling in Addressing Psychosocial Issues Among LGBT Individuals” was held on 10 July 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Counselling Division Meeting Room, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The program aimed to strengthen counsellors' knowledge and skills in addressing a topic that is often considered taboo.
The session successfully gathered 12 counsellors from the UPM Counselling Division (BKUPM) and Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah. The program featured a special guest speaker, Ms. Ratna Safura Kamal Shari, a Psychologist from the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Selangor.
This initiative aimed to reinforce the role of counsellors in handling issues related to sexual orientation, a subject gaining increased attention in society. Topics discussed included ethical counselling approaches, cultural and religious sensitivity, and evidence-based intervention strategies to support individuals experiencing sexual identity conflict.

According to Mrs. Ratna,“LPPKN is committed to fostering family and community well-being. LGBT issues require a comprehensive and empathetic approach that not only focuses on the individual but also involves families and communities. Counsellors should act as mediators who support the process of positive and respectful change.”
The case discussion session was facilitated by a panel of experienced counsellors who shared real-life field challenges, including ethical dilemmas, social pressures, and the need to empower emotional resilience among affected youth.
Mr. Mohamad Ashaari Awab, Head of the Self-Development Section, stated:“Through this case conference, we hope counsellors gain clarity and confidence in handling LGBT-related cases professionally and responsibly, in line with counselling principles that respect individual values and promote social harmony.”

The program also included an interactive Q&A session and encouraged collaborative networking between BKUPM and LPPKN to continue inclusive and effective intervention initiatives.
With initiatives like this, it is hoped that all participants will benefit and that the program achieves its objective of equipping counsellors with the knowledge and preparedness to support clients facing LGBT-related issues in a professional and empathetic manner.
