The Importance of Aligning Personality and Career Interests

By : Mrs. Noorihayatti binti Noorudin K.B.;P.A.

SERDANG, December 27 - The Career Planning Unit, UPM Counseling Division (BKUPM), organized the Putra Career Choice Program in collaboration with the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK) for the sixth time. The main objective of this program was to help Bachelor of Communication (Honours) students focus on their career paths by offering four fields: Corporate Communication, Humanities, Journalism, and Broadcasting. In line with this, the Sidek Career Interest Inventory (IMKS) was used to help align the students' personalities and career interests with their chosen field.

A total of 128 students participated in answering the IMKS on 6th December 2024 at the Za'ba Auditorium, FBMK, coordinated by Dr. Jen-Sern Tham (Senior Lecturer, FBMK). The analysis of the results was conducted from 9th to 11th December 2024 by Puan Noorihayatti Noorudin, the program coordinator at the division level, and assisted by Encik Ansarul Haq Tahrir Adli (Psychology Officer, BKUPM).

The analysis results showed that 65.6% of students obtained the highest scores in their first-choice field. This alignment is crucial because when the chosen field matches a student's personality and interests, they are more motivated to study and tackle challenges. Furthermore, selecting a field based on compatibility ensures that students remain engaged and excel throughout their academic and future career paths. Additionally, students tend to acquire the relevant skills faster when they are passionate about the subject, which in turn enhances their employability upon graduation.

It is hoped that this program can assist students in making the right career decisions and reduce stress by allowing them to adjust more easily to the academic requirements and environment.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Jen-Sern Tham, the Program Coordinator at the faculty level, who is also a Senior Lecturer at FBMK, for his close cooperation and support in ensuring the smooth running of the program. We hope that this program can continue in the future.
