Many people think success comes from big, drastic changes, but the reality is that lasting success often starts with small, consistent steps. This concept is known as The Power of Small Steps - building success gradually through small changes that have a big impact in the long run.
How Are Small Steps Powerful?
Easy to Do – Small changes are easier to start and maintain.
Less Burden – Doesn’t require big motivation or drastic courage.
Sustained Momentum – Small, consistent actions lead to big results.
Avoiding Procrastination – By breaking things down into small steps, we are more likely to get started.
Let’s do these five (5) techniques in shaping big success starting with small steps.
- The 1% Method: Improve a Little Every Day
This principle states that if you improve just 1% every day, in a year you will grow almost 37 times better!
Example:
• If you want to read more books, start with 5 minutes a day.
• If you want to get healthy, start with 10 minutes of walking every day.
Tip: Focus on small improvements, not perfection.
- ‘Rules Of 5 Minutes’: Start With A Small Steps
If a task feels overwhelming, do it for just 5 minutes to get used to it. Once you start, you’ll often find yourself continuing for longer without even realizing it.
Tip: Use this method for homework, reading, exercising, or anything else that you often put off.
- Kaizen Technique: Micro Changes For Maximum Results
Kaizen is a Japanese concept that means continuous improvement through small changes. For example:
• If you want to wake up earlier, try going to bed 5 minutes earlier each night.
• If you want to eat healthier, replace one unhealthy food with a healthier option each week.
Tip: Don’t change too many things at once—focus on one small change at a time.
- ‘Habit Stacking’ Technique: Intergrate with Existing Routines
The best way to build new habits is to combine them with existing routines. Examples:
• After brushing your teeth, do 10 seconds of meditation.
• After making your morning coffee, read a page of a book.
Tip: Use this format: “After [old habit], I will [new habit].”
- “Do It Badly” Principle – Don’t Wait for Perfection!
Many people don’t start because they’re afraid the results won’t be perfect. The secret? Just do it, even if it’s not perfect. Examples:
• Don’t wait for the right time to write—start with one sentence.
• Don’t wait for motivation to exercise—start with one small leap.
Tip: Progress is better than perfection.
In short, you don’t need big changes to achieve success. With small, continuous steps, you will reach your goals without stress and are easier to maintain.
