NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: 7 WAYS TO UNDERSTAND YOUR PARTNER

By : Mrs. Kemelia binti Omar

Communication is not limited to words. Communication in intimate relationships, such as romance or marriage, does not always involve talking. Partners often use non-verbal cues to understand each other’s feelings, desires, or frustrations. Partners can understand each other better without saying anything when they communicate non-verbally, which is also known as non-verbal communication.

  1. Body Language: Saying More Than Words

One of the easiest ways to communicate non-verbally is through body language. Even if partners are not talking, their movements, facial expressions, and posture can reveal a lot about their feelings. For example:

  • Reaching Hands or Hugs: To express affection without saying anything, a gentle touch on your partner’s hand or a hug can be a very good way to show love.
  • Facial Expressions: Eye contact, furrowing of the brow, or a smile can convey our feelings in a deeper way than words.
  • Body Posture: The way a partner sits or stands when with us shows their interest and involvement in the conversation, especially if they face us with full attention or lean toward us.

We can become more aware of our partner’s feelings by understanding their body language, and at the same time, they can understand us in the same way.

  1. Eyes: The Window to the Soul
  • One of the most effective forms of non-verbal communication is the eyes. Eyes can express many things that words cannot say. For example, the loving gaze of our partner shows their feelings toward us. Without saying anything, a thoughtful look or a soft gaze can show support, love, and understanding.
  • Soft and Warm Gaze: This type of gaze shows that your partner is present and emotionally connected with you.
  • Narrowed or Furrowed Eyes: Narrowed eyes can sometimes signal that your partner is uncomfortable or anxious.
  1. Physical Distance: Maintaining Emotional Connection

The physical distance between partners is also a very important form of communication. Keeping distance or staying close to your partner shows the level of comfort and intimacy in the relationship.

  • Getting Closer in Intimate Moments: If your partner unconsciously moves closer to you, such as sitting next to you or placing their hand on your shoulder, it shows they are seeking intimacy and want to share that experience.
  • Wider or Cooler Distance: On the other hand, moving away or not interacting physically can signal discomfort or emotional distance between partners.
  1. Touch: Conveying Affection and Support

In a relationship, touch is a great way to communicate without words. It can convey support, love, and comfort without speaking.

  • Hugs: Partners can feel safe and calm when they receive a warm hug. It shows that we are there for them, without needing further explanation.
  • Gentle Touches: When our partner is going through a difficult time, a light touch on their shoulder or arm can signal concern or comfort.
  1. Atmosphere and Environment: Conveying Feelings Without Words

Sometimes, more than what we say, the environment or atmosphere can tell our feelings. To express affection without using words, one can light candles or prepare their partner’s favorite food. Without having to talk about it, these actions or elements show that our partner cares about their needs and desires.

  1. Time and Presence: Showing Love Through Presence

Non-verbal communication is very valuable with attentive presence. There are times when a partner only needs our presence to feel valued and supported. We don’t always need to speak or give advice. Sometimes, the best way to show that we care is to sit silently with them or allow them to express their feelings.

  1. Speaking Without Sound: The Role of Silence in Communication

Sometimes, silence is the best way to express feelings. A partner may prefer to speak without sound in certain situations, such as when they are stressed or don’t know how to express their feelings. Partners can use this silence to give themselves time to think and reflect.

Conclusion

In a relationship, non-verbal communication is a very effective tool. We can become better at understanding our partner’s feelings by interpreting their body language, facial expressions, touch, and other non-verbal cues. This will allow us to build a more intimate and loving relationship with them. Sometimes, our presence and actions are enough to express everything; communication does not always require words. Our relationship with our partner can become more sensitive, understanding, and harmonious if we focus on non-verbal communication.
