CARES ABOUT THE WELL-BEING OF YOUR STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM

By : Mr. Mohamad Za’im bin Rosli K.B.;P.A.

Today, student leadership teams play a key role in the management of universities, whether at the faculty level, residential colleges, or at centers of responsibility (PTJ). The growing responsibilities placed upon them with the aspiration of gaining experience in university administration can become a burden and pressure if they are not provided with a conducive and efficient administrative ecosystem.

Therefore, this article will discuss the role that university management at various levels needs to play in caring for the well-being of the student leadership team that helps or supports the services at this university.
One of the main aspects that can be focused on is caring about the work boundaries or scope of work that they need to carry out. It is important to clarify this so that these individuals do not feel manipulated. Clearly state what forms of support and services are suitable within their limitations, as outlined in the guidelines.

When all parties are clear about their respective scopes of work, including boundaries or limitations of their roles, PTJ should then care about the time space of these leaders. Aware that their time is quite limited, it is important to manage time effectively. Every meeting should set an appropriate time limit and aim to achieve the goals of the discussion. Avoid interrupting their lecture times or holding late-night meetings. This will create a win-win situation between students and management.

Next, provide them with effective management training and not just assign tasks and leave them without guidance. It should be reminded that their presence is to help, not to complete tasks that are already the responsibility of a particular PTJ.

Finally, appreciate their contributions with various forms of recognition. The simplest form of appreciation is through words of praise and acknowledgment. Harsh criticism will only demoralize them from further developing themselves. This, in turn, will teach them as leaders to appreciate their subordinates in the future.
