Generally, emotions and humans try to protect themselves from things that are unproductive or painful. The same goes for mood – it is a state where an individual lacks enthusiasm, eagerness, or desire to do something. A bad mood signals that the body and mind need rest. However, it often happens that your mood tends to stay in a bad state, which leads to tasks being delayed. The question is, should you wait for a good mood before starting work? Here are some guidelines to ensure that your well-being is maintained while productivity is not disrupted by a bad mood.
1) Identify When Your Mood is Bad
The first step is to identify patterns when your mood is not good. This could be on Monday mornings (Monday blues), after returning from a work trip, participating in a sports competition, etc. These events are often connected to your physical condition. Once you recognize these patterns, you can anticipate how you’ll feel after engaging in these activities.
2) Take Immediate Action like Light Exercise/Power Nap/Taking a Break
Once you've identified the situations that usually affect your mood, take immediate action. You could do light exercise, take a short nap (power nap), or take a break. These actions are crucial to prevent your bad mood from persisting without any effort to improve it.
3) Get Used to Starting Work Even When Your Mood Is Bad
If you’ve already taken some actions to improve your mood but it’s still not good, this is likely a sign from your body and mind to stay comfortable and avoid tasks that could cause stress. Don’t get used to listening to this signal. If you often follow this urge, you’ll become less active and addicted to resting for long periods. Instead, plan to start working. Even if your mood is still not great, once you begin working and find your rhythm, you will become productive again.
4) Always Take Care of Your Physical and Mental Health
A bad mood is related to both thoughts and physical health. To strengthen your mental resilience, practice self-talk and break free from irrational thinking patterns. To maintain your physical health, optimize your exercise routine and control your diet by eating only healthy foods.
5) Challenge Yourself to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Finally, whether someone is productive or not depends on their consistency. The more consistently you start and finish tasks, the more productive you will be. Therefore, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Take a break if your mood is bad for about an hour, but don’t delay finishing your work after that.
