COUNSELOR, IS IT TRUE? I can't compare myself to my friends?

By : Mrs. Wan Azurani binti Wan Ahmad K.B.;P.A.

Yes, every person has their own uniqueness. Let me share five tips for living happily…

First – Don’t hate anyone.
Second – Don’t compare yourself to others.
Third – Don't worry about your past or future.
Fourth – Don’t expect to get what you give.
Fifth – Never complain about your difficulties.

Let’s break down the second tip: Don’t compare yourself to others. When we compare ourselves to others, we may feel inferior or, conversely, develop a sense of pride. This relates to self-esteem and self-confidence.

So, what is self-esteem in the context of self? Self-esteem is the belief in oneself. For example, we may compare ourselves based on appearance, wealth, or academic achievements. When we feel we’re not as great as our friends, feelings of jealousy may arise. If we don’t feel jealousy, we might still feel inferior, leading to a lack of self-confidence, especially if our friends are doing better. Conversely, if we are better than others, it may lead to arrogance, which isn’t good for our relationships.

Self-esteem or self-belief is one of the essential elements in every person. With self-esteem, we can live our daily lives more comfortably. Self-esteem is related to our ability to believe in ourselves and be confident in our strengths. It significantly affects our confidence in navigating life. Self-esteem encourages us to try new things, learn new skills, make new friends, and much more.

So, to be confident, self-assured, calm, and happy, we shouldn’t compare ourselves to one another. We each have our own uniqueness, as do our friends. We all have shortcomings. Be moderate and turn your uniqueness and weaknesses into strengths. We are who we are, always striving for goodness. Rest assured, we’ll find peace within ourselves…
