COUNSELOR, IS IT TRUE? WILL LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES DISRUPT MY ACADEMIC QUALITY?

By : Mr. Mohamad Za’im bin Rosli K.B.;P.A.

Thank you to those who asked. It can be true or false. First and foremost, it must be acknowledged that holistic excellence is important for every student. This is also the government's aspiration to produce quality and competitive graduates.

To ensure that students possess the qualities desired by employers, excellence must be viewed in a broader context and not solely focused on academic success.

Certainly, this presents a challenge for students, but achieving this balance is not impossible. Many students have successfully demonstrated that leadership activities do not disrupt academic quality; in fact, they can enhance it.

However, it cannot be denied that some student leaders experience a decline in their academic performance after becoming active in leadership roles. The question is, how can one achieve this balanced excellence?

First and foremost, it is important for students to cultivate big dreams and believe that these dreams are achievable. Next, students should strategize their excellence according to each semester.

Starting with academic achievements for the semester, students must be aware of and proficient in their university's grading system. Many students neglect to understand this grading knowledge, leading to disappointment in their academic results.

Next, set targets for achievement in leadership activities. It’s essential to remember that involvement in leadership activities is a year-round commitment and not limited to just 14 weeks.

Thus, students can organize leadership activities without disrupting their class schedules. If leadership activities need to take place during class hours, students should adeptly use their academic calendar to plan accordingly.

Choosing quality associations is also crucial. Be a leader who is selective about the quality of leadership. Choose organizations or leaders who are capable and skilled, and can benefit you. Avoid associations that are poorly planned, overly spontaneous, or emotionally charged.

I hope these insights help you.
