Cyberbullying and social media: How to Raise Awareness Among University Students

By: Mohamad Ashaari bin Awab

Cyberbullying, is becoming a serious issue among university students, especially with the widespread use of social media. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok are often the main spaces where online bullying occurs. This article will discuss the role of social media in cyberbullying and how to raise awareness among university students.

1. The Role of social media in Cyberbullying

Social media provides a space for interaction and communication, but it can also be a medium for cyberbullying. Students often fall victim to negative comments, gossip, or misuse of personal information. According to a study by Hinduja and Patchin (2018), over 50% of university students have experienced cyberbullying through social media.

2. The Impact of Cyberbullying via social media

The impact of cyberbullying through social media is deeply concerning. Victims may experience emotional stress such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Additionally, online bullying can affect academic performance and social relationships.

3. Raising Awareness Among Students

To address this issue, awareness about the dangers of online bullying needs to be increased. Here are some steps that can be taken:

  • Awareness Programs: Universities can organize programs such as talks, workshops, or campaigns on responsible social media use.
  • Digital Education: Students need to be educated about the ethics of social media use and the importance of online privacy.
  • Emotional Support: University counsellors can provide emotional support to students who become victims of online bullying.

4. The Role of Students in Preventing Cyberbullying

Students also play an important role in preventing cyberbullying. They need to:

  • Respect the privacy and rights of others.
  • Report any incidents of online bullying to social media platform authorities or university administration.
  • Become "upstanders" by helping victims of cyberbullying and not just being bystanders.

5. Collaboration Among All Parties

Raising awareness about cyberbullying requires collaboration among all parties, including students, lecturers, parents, and university administration. With this collaboration, a safer and more positive university environment can be created.
