Diet: Beneficial or Harmful?

By : Ms. Nur Syahida Wirduna binti Zulkifly

Diet is an important practice in our daily lives. As time progresses, more and more people are paying attention to their food choices to ensure that their bodies remain healthy and fit. Various types of diets have emerged, each with different goals, such as weight loss, improving health, or as part of a healthier lifestyle.

However, the main question that often arises is whether diet is beneficial or harmful to health?

In general, a good diet is a balanced one, containing a variety of foods that provide all the necessary nutrients for our body. A diet rich in protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals, is crucial for supporting bodily functions. For example, eating foods like fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can help the body maintain energy, control weight, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

However, not all diets practiced are safe. Some types of diets are too strict and extreme, such as long-term low-calorie diets or diets that limit certain food groups. Such diets can lead to a deficiency in essential nutrients, which can negatively affect health. Undoubtedly, a lack of vitamins, minerals, and fiber can cause health problems such as fatigue, a weakened immune system, and disruption to organ functions. Furthermore, diets that focus too much on rapid weight loss can also have negative effects on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being, leading to anxiety or depression.

Next, diets promising quick results also carry the risk of harm to the body. For example, some diet products that are promoted promise fast results for the body. This can be dangerous because these products may have side effects if used for a prolonged period. Additionally, diets that overly depend on supplements can disrupt the nutritional balance in the body and negatively impact long-term health.

In conclusion, a good diet is a balanced one based on healthy foods, not one that is extreme or risky. If an individual wishes to follow a diet, it is important to seek advice from a qualified nutritionist or doctor to ensure that the diet is suitable and safe for the body. Ultimately, healthy eating is not just for weight loss, but to ensure that both the body and mind remain in the best possible condition.
