FEAR OF SPEAKING - WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

By : Mrs. Kamariah binti Derasol K.B.;P.A.

Have you ever noticed that some people have difficulty speaking? Often, they choose to remain silent or only speak when asked. This article is not about individuals who have an introverted personality and are naturally more reserved. Instead, the focus is on individuals who find it difficult to speak due to the following factors:

Family upbringing that doesn't encourage open interaction within the family.

Children raised in families where the parents are strict may grow up not daring to voice their opinions. The subconscious fear created by this upbringing leads them to believe that they have no right to speak up. When faced with authority figures, these individuals tend to comply, even though many desires are left unspoken.

Fear of speaking due to unpleasant past experiences.

For example, being mocked for stuttering when questioned by a teacher at school. Experiences like being teased during youth can significantly affect an individual's confidence in communication. This could also be related to physical appearance, such as being overweight, having acne, or crooked teeth.

Lack of knowledge and communication skills.

Some individuals lack the opportunity to learn communication skills. As they progress in life, they may not realize the need to upgrade their communication knowledge and skills. This includes verbal communication, non-verbal communication, body language, media communication, and more. What’s important is to create space for oneself to learn new things, regardless of age.

You can use the 3P communication tips – People, Place, Purpose:
Communicate using the appropriate language style for the person you are interacting with.
Communicate based on the suitability of the organization or location.
Communicate with a clear purpose and goal in mind.

Remember, speaking helps to clarify information and meaning in communication between us.
