Author: Mohamad Ashaari bin Awab K.B,P.A

Finances are an important factor in our lives and financial problems can cause stress, anxiety and depression. This can impact a person's mental health and affect their overall well-being. Some of the ways financial problems can affect mental health include losing a job, having trouble paying bills or debt, and financial uncertainty can all cause significant stress. Financial instability can cause excessive worry about the future. This may be a trigger for chronic stress that can trigger mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Other than that. Financial problems can also affect relationships and families. Financial conflicts can cause rifts in relationships and this can also affect mental health.

Now, not only in Malaysia but all over the world is facing an economic crisis that causes the price of goods to become more expensive as well as an increase in the cost of living. When we talk about the rising cost of living, it is very closely related to mental health.

Referring to an article published by Harian Metro on 5 July 2022 by Muhamaad Razis Ismail entitled 'Ekonomi jatuh, mental luruh'. Economic position, career, stability of source of income, well-being of residence, number of dependents and debt burden are among the factors that will determine a person's mental health status.

In addition, individuals who experience financial problems often feel ashamed and low self-esteem. They may feel like they are failing in their lives and this can affect their mental health.

Therefore, it is very important to manage finances well and get help if needed. There are many resources available such as counselors, Credit Counseling and Management Agency (AKPK) and so on that are ready to help you plan your financial management and help you gain common sense to deal with financial problems and maintain good mental health.
