Every person has the desire to be loved and cared for. But when a relationship ends, what then? Feelings of sadness, anger, resentment, heartbreak, and a loss of motivation often come in waves. If these negative emotions aren’t managed properly, they can have serious consequences—some people suffer for a long time, and sadly, some even feel like they can’t go on living.
Here are four (4) helpful tips you can try when you’re going through a breakup:
Right after a breakup, you may feel worthless—like trash. You’ll find yourself constantly asking, Why? What went wrong? What’s wrong with me? The overwhelming sadness can hit hard. So cry. Studies show that crying can help release and relieve deep emotional pain. However, don’t let yourself cry endlessly. A few days or even a week of feeling sad is okay—but set a limit. Don’t let your tears and sadness take over your life.
Sharing what you’re going through can ease emotional pressure. Even if your friend doesn’t say much back, just having someone to listen to makes a huge difference. Find a close friend who can lend an ear and keep your feelings confidential. Sometimes, you don’t need solutions—you just need to be heard.
Shift your focus to something else—preferably something you enjoy. By doing this, you create space for positive things to enter your life. Over time, you’ll start to see that your problem isn't as overwhelming as it felt at first—and you can get through it.
Get back to your roles and responsibilities. If you're a university student, reconnect with your short- and long-term goals. Let go of past memories slowly. Every experience becomes a lesson. Every person you meet teaches you something. Use this moment to grow into a better version of yourself—for today and for the future. Breakups hurt, but they don’t define your worth or your future. Be gentle with yourself, take the time to heal, and trust that brighter days will come.
