How to Protect Yourself from Cyberbullying

By : Mr. Mohamad Ashaari bin Awab K.B.;P.A.

Cyberbullying is a serious issue that can affect the mental and emotional health of victims. However, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from becoming a victim of online bullying.

Step 1: Guard Your Online Privacy

Privacy is the key to protecting yourself from cyberbullying. Do not share personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, or private photos on social media. Adjust your privacy settings on social media accounts to limit who can see your content. Exposed personal information can be misused by cyberbullies to threaten or embarrass you. Additionally, avoid accepting friend requests from strangers. Remember, not everyone online has good intentions.

Step 2: Block and Report the Bully

If you receive unpleasant messages or comments, immediately block the user. Report the incident to the social media platform for further action. Most platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have reporting functions for abuse. This action not only protects you but also helps reduce the risk of others becoming victims. Save evidence such as screenshots for future reference. This evidence can be used if you decide to report the incident to authorities.

Step 3: Do Not Respond

Responding to negative messages or comments will only worsen the situation. Cyberbullies often seek reactions, and responding will only give them satisfaction. Instead, save evidence like screenshots for future reference. If you feel stressed, talk to someone you trust. Do not let negative emotions take over. Remember, you are not at fault, and there are people willing to help you.

Step 4: Seek Support

Talk to family, friends, or a counsellor if you experience cyberbullying. They can provide emotional support and help you deal with the situation. Do not feel ashamed or guilty for being a victim of cyberbullying. Remember, you are not at fault, and there are people willing to help you. If necessary, seek professional help from a counsellor or psychologist. They can help you manage your emotions and rebuild your confidence.
By following these steps, you can protect yourself from cyberbullying and enjoy a safer online experience. Remember, you have the right to feel safe and respected, both online and offline.
