Life Goal

By : Mr. Haniff Abdullah Hashim

Mom was crying again, her eyes red-rimmed. Tears were flowing down her face, drenching her headscarf and her soft yellow baju kurung. She hugged her son raptly and took in the faces of her daughter in law and her grandchildren. Her heart still feels heavy, heavy to let go of her one and only son. She was thinking of how old she is, with an age that almost reached 80. Natural law dictates that she would have to face her Creator soon. Maybe this could be the last time she would see her son, Razak, her third child out of four children. Razak’s tears are echoed by her mother’s, what child would be able to hear the cries of their own mother. He felt boneless and weak-limbed.

This time, he was determined. He will prove it. This was the moment that he has been dreaming for. After his dream drifted and got carried away by the ocean that is life. Now, he is determined to swim and face the turbulent waves. Now forty-five years old, he is a young man no longer. He didn’t know when death would come knocking on his door. He looked around. The call from the overhead speakers has rung several times, calling for passengers of flight A0370, bound for the United States of America, to quickly board the flight.

He released the embrace. He held his mother’s shoulders. Lowered his head. He held his mother’s weak hands as tight as he could. He stared into his mother’s aging face and the wrinkles on her forehead.

“Mom, if this is the last time we meet, I want to apologize. I would like to ask for your endless forgiveness. Please bless all the food and drinks that you have given me, Mom,” His voice was being drowned out by his tears. He sobbed in the embrace of a mother.

His mother cried and sobbed, she could no longer bottled all the feelings of sadness, anguish and worry and everything poured out of her like a dam breaking apart. “Me too, Razak. Always pray the best for our family, InsyaAllah, if we have more time, we’ll see each other again. If time runs out, I want to ask for your forgiveness too, son”. Once again, they were drowning in their feelings.

His sister came to separate the embrace of mother and son. Comforting her mother, and saying goodbyes to her brother. “You’re sure about this, Razak?” She stared into her brother’s face with eyes full of questions. “Of course, sister. This is my time. At least before I die, I want to work hard to achieve my dream. I won’t have to be ashamed to tell my children that I had a dream, and I worked hard to achieve it.” His sister could merely shake her head and smile. A smile with a thousand meanings. “Why now, Razak? Mom is old, her time could be soon,” Said his sister while wiping tears away.

“Me too, sister. I don’t know when God would take my life away, too. There’s no difference, if you’re old or if you’re young. Give me a chance, I will redeem my lost dream.” “I thought you'd already forgotten that dream.”

“It’s true that I almost forgot my dream. But lately my life feels so empty, as if there’s some promise in me that I still need to keep.” He returned to embrace his mother, “Mom, I beg of you, please give me your blessings. You’ve told me once that I need to keep learning as long as I’m able to, that it will be a possession that I can pass down to your grandchildren. Thank you for everything, Mom.”

With a heavy heart, he walked away from his family. He braced his heart and didn’t turn for one last look. Hardened his heart like a titanium that can’t be melted down. With his mother’s blessing allowing him to go, only the nuances of separation can tear his buried spirit.

The captain of the Boeing 777 flight had announced for takeoff, and asked the cabin crews to take their seats. When the engine of the Boeing 777 roared and it soared higher and higher in the sky and among the clouds, he saw the faces of his children and his wife and felt tears forming in his eyes. The tears flowed. Dreams always required determination, and the determination that hurts him this time around is to leave his aging mother, on a thousand miles journey.
