Soft Skills vs. Hard Skills: Effective Leadership Among University Students

By : Ms. Nik Fatin Nur Aqilah binti Muhammad Hilmi

In the world of higher education, academic skills alone are not sufficient to ensure a student's success. Effective leadership among university students requires a balance between soft skills and hard skills. Both types of skills play an important role in shaping individuals who are not only excellent in academics but also capable of managing themselves and others effectively.

Hard skills refer to technical and academic skills that can be measured and learned formally, such as skills in project management, the use of specific software, data analysis, and expertise in certain fields of study. These skills are usually acquired through classroom learning, practical training, or work experience. On the other hand, soft skills are related to interpersonal and intrapersonal skills that determine how a person interacts with others. This includes communication, leadership, critical thinking, cooperation, and problem-solving abilities. Soft skills are not directly taught in the academic curriculum but develop through experience, extracurricular activities, and social interactions.

In the context of student leadership, soft skills often determine the effectiveness of a leader. Communication skills, for example, help in conveying ideas clearly and convincingly, while empathy allows leaders to understand the needs and concerns of their team members. The ability to think critically and resolve conflicts also makes a leader more effective in tackling challenges. At university, students who hold leadership positions in associations, organizations, or group projects need to develop strong soft skills to manage team members, negotiate with stakeholders, and make sound decisions. The ability to work as a team and handle academic pressure and challenges also depends on the level of soft skills possessed.

Although soft skills are very important, hard skills cannot be overlooked either. A good leader must possess sufficient technical knowledge and skills to understand the assigned tasks and manage a project efficiently. For example, a student association president managing the organization's finances needs to understand the basics of accounting and budget management.

Effective leadership is the result of a combination of hard skills and soft skills. Students who can balance both of these skills are not only able to manage academic responsibilities well but also become respected and competitive leaders in the professional world later on. Therefore, university students are encouraged to engage in extracurricular activities, attend leadership workshops, and seek practical experiences to strengthen both of these skills.

Leadership among university students is not only dependent on academic excellence but also on the ability to interact, adapt, and solve problems effectively. Soft skills and hard skills must go hand in hand to shape resilient and effective leaders in facing real-world challenges. Students who successfully develop a balance between these two skills will be more prepared to take on leadership roles, not only at the university level but also in their careers and lives in the future.
