STUDENT LEADERS: DEVELOPING OR DESTROYING POTENTIAL

By: Mr. Mohamad Za’im bin Rosli K.B.;P.A.

Indeed, the aspect of student leadership is an important aspect in building a quality and competitive character.

But is this talent managed, led well on campus? To what extent are their well-being, the sustainability of their professional development and their intellectual quality taken care of by the system and the campus people?

It may be that student leaders are only seen as porters who finish the work of the university by being burdened with various roles and tasks on the ticket of maturity to lead or give space to lead.

This question arises when the writer is with this line of leaders in various series of sharing and training to exchange views and feelings. This kind of expansion opens the writer's eyes to reconsider their point of view with the support system provided to them.

The lack of quality leadership training, the weak old-fashioned administrative system that is still practiced whether at the residential college, university or ministry level, lack of funding, minimal facilities further weaken the spirit of these leaders.

The group of student leaders is seen to be constantly swayed by the government's heavy policies that dream of them being equally involved in university administration while they are not yet ready and unable to cope with the burden of their own academic and financial tasks. The dream that used to want to develop leadership talent may now only collapse the potential.

The writer sees that this issue cannot be ignored or denied. All parties need to help those who have good leadership qualities on this campus to stay awake and protect their well-being.

At the university level, what can be done is the transformation of student leadership that includes staffing at the university level, faculties, residential colleges, and association clubs need to be implemented. It also needs to cover the transformation of the association's ecosystem, holistic digital management, effective training modules, facilities, and funding.

UPM's counseling department through the role of student self-development is also ready to cooperate in providing the best service to the student leadership. We believe that individual potential will continue to grow along with the well-being of a good self. The counselor's role in developing student leadership potential should not be separated.
