The Use of Mushroom Vape: Risky Trend Among Youths

By : Mr. Rushan bin Mazly

In recent times, a notable trend has surfaced among young people which is the use of mushroom vapes. This product merges the excitement of vaping with the psychoactive effects of certain mushrooms, leading to its growing popularity. While some may perceive it as a harmless trend, it is important to recognize the potential risks and implications that come with its use.

Mushroom vape refers to electronic devices used to inhale vapors infused with extracts from psychoactive mushrooms, such as Psilocybin mushrooms. These mushrooms are renowned for their hallucinogenic properties, which can significantly alter perception, mood, and cognitive functions. The attraction of mushroom vapes lies in their capacity to deliver these effects quickly and discreetly.

However, why are youths attracted to mushroom vapes? There are several explanations that contribute to the increasing interest in mushroom vapes among youngsters; curiosity and experimentation, perceived safety, peer influence, and ease of access. Firstly, adolescence is often a time for exploration and new experiences. The novelty of mushroom vapes, along with their potential to create altered states of consciousness, makes them particularly appealing. Hence, making it a trend which tickles youths’ curiosity thus leads them to experiment with it themselves. Secondly, many youths mistakenly believe that vaping is a safer alternative to traditional smoking. This misconception extends to mushroom vapes, even in the absence of thorough research on their health impacts. Hence, making them perceive it as something safe and not harmful to their health. Thirdly, social dynamics significantly influence the adoption of trends among young people. Observing peers using mushroom vapes can foster a sense of normalcy and acceptance, encouraging others to try them. Especially youngsters nowadays would feel FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) if they did not or were late to engage with the trends. Lastly, the internet provides straightforward access to a wide array of products. Thus, making it easy for tech-savvy youths to acquire mushroom vapes with just a click such as in online stores or social media.

While the appeal of mushroom vapes is obvious, it is essential to highlight the potential risks involved which include health risks, legal issues, and mental health implications. The long-term health effects of inhaling vaporized psilocybin are not well understood. Possible risks may include respiratory issues, and psychological effects. In many countries, psilocybin mushrooms are classified as illegal substances. Possessing or using mushroom vapes could result in legal repercussions, affecting a young person's future. Psilocybin can trigger intense psychological experiences that may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with pre-existing mental health conditions. There is a risk of inducing anxiety, and paranoia.

Henceforth, to combat the rise of mushroom vape use among youths, promoting awareness and education is critical which can be done by doing open dialogue, information campaigns, and support systems. Firstly, encourage open discussions between parents, educators, and youths about the potential risks and misconceptions related to mushroom vapes. Next, schools and community organizations can implement educational campaigns to inform youths about the realities and legalities of using such substances. Lastly, establishing support networks for youths experimenting with or affected by substance use can provide guidance and help minimize risks.

In a nutshell, as mushroom vapes continue to grow in popularity, understanding their appeal and potential dangers is essential for parents, educators, and policymakers. By fostering informed discussions and providing accurate information, we can assist youths in making safer, more informed choices regarding their health and well-being.
