Tips for Finding Friends at University

By Mrs. Kemelia Omar

Meeting new people and making them friends is very difficult especially for introverted individuals. However, with a little effort and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, you can easily make friends. Here are some tips that you can try to make friends at university.

 1. Spends time.

If you want to make friends, you have to go out and meet other people. If you just sit with your chin up, it's impossible for people to come to you. For example, if in a lecture hall, try to sit next to other people. You don't need to sit at a table surrounded by many people, if only two people are enough. Remember, friends may not come just like that if you are just sitting in front of your laptop or mobile phone. If you have time to go out and meet people, do it! For example, attend a university-sponsored program or party invitation.

2. Join organizations or clubs and associations.

This method is suitable for those of you who want to meet people with similar interests. You don't have to have many interests in common to be friends with them. In fact, two people who have little in common can still be good friends. However, if you like a certain topic, you can find places where you can meet people with similar interests. For example, you can join the Rakan Siswa Club, the Selangor Natives Club, the Rakan Muda's Club and so on. If you can play an instrument or sing, join a band or choir. For those of you who have an athletic body that likes to try new and challenging things, you are more suitable to join a sports team such as football, cycling, archery and so on.

 3. Participate in volunteer activities.

Volunteering can be a great way to meet people of all ages. Through activities like this, you can make connections with other people. You will meet people who also want to change something, people for the same reasons. For example, you can spend time helping in nursing homes, hospitals and shelters. You can contact the nearest organization to find volunteers nearby.

 4. Try reconnecting with people you know.

Perhaps, you have known some people who have the potential to become good friends. Try to get to know classmates or friends better on social media. For example, contact a friend you met at a Public University Convention and have a discussion about a collaborative program.
