Tips to Overcome Nervousness During Presentations

By : Mrs. Anis Akmilah binti Mat Hassan K.B.;P.A.

Assignments - commonly known as “assignments” among students - are a regular part of student life. Often, they involve a presentation phase in class, where students present their work to be evaluated by their lecturers. However, many students shy away from presenting due to fear of nervousness or stage fright. In reality, presenting is one of the best ways to build self-confidence.

Here are some useful tips to help you manage nervousness during presentations:

1. Breathing Exercises

Practice deep breathing to help you relax. Feel the air slowly entering your lungs, then let it flow calmly through your body, filling you with positive energy. Clear your mind in silence and quietly repeat a calming mantra—such as a prayer or positive words—to ease your heart and mind.

2. Be Prepared & Stay Calm

Close your eyes for a moment and picture the faces of those you love and miss. Trust in your preparation and your ability. Try simple calming techniques. When you’re composed and focused, you’ll make better decisions and overcome challenges more effectively.

To reduce pressure, avoid looking directly at faces that are watching you closely. Instead, focus on neutral objects around the room. As you present, move your gaze between three key points—left, center-back, and right—to give the impression that you’re confidently engaging the entire room.

3. Don’t Panic If You Feel Nervous

Feeling nervous or having a racing heart is completely normal—and it happens to everyone. Take a moment to breathe deeply and center your thoughts. Remind yourself that you do have the strength to face any challenge.

If that’s not enough, ask a friend to be near you as a support system. Holding a solid object (like a water bottle or marker) can help ground you - but avoid holding loose papers, as they might shake and draw attention to your nervousness. And most importantly - start your talk with a smile!

Remember: Nervousness doesn’t mean you’re weak - it means you care. With the right mindset and a few techniques, you can turn your nervous energy into confident delivery. Good luck, and go rock that presentation!
