Why Are Students More Attracted to Gig Economy Careers?

By : Mr. Mohd Redzuan bin Zamberi K.B.;P.A.

Introduction

In the rapidly growing digital era, the concept of the "gig economy" has become increasingly popular, especially among students. The gig economy refers to a system of freelance work based on short-term projects or tasks through digital platforms such as Grab, Foodpanda, Upwork, Fiverr, Shopee Live, and more. This shift in the job landscape offers various opportunities for students to earn income and gain work experience without being tied to a permanent job. This article will discuss the key factors that make students more attracted to careers in the gig economy.

  1. Flexibility in Working Hours

One of the main factors that attract students to the gig economy is the flexibility in working hours. Unlike conventional jobs with fixed schedules, gig work allows students to arrange their own schedules according to their class times and academic commitments. This gives them the freedom to work at any time without disrupting their studies.

  1. Opportunity to Earn Extra Income

The rising cost of living makes it necessary for students to seek additional sources of income to cover daily expenses, tuition fees, and personal needs. The gig economy provides various opportunities to earn quick and easy income, such as:

  • Becoming a ride-hailing driver (Grab, inDrive)
  • Food delivery (Foodpanda, Shopee Food)
  • Freelance writing (Fiverr, Upwork)
  • Graphic design or video editing
  • Online tutoring

With these job options, students can earn extra income without being tied to a permanent job.

  1. Easy Access Through Technology

Advancements in technology and widespread internet usage have made it easier for students to participate in the gig economy. With just a smartphone or laptop, they can easily find online jobs. Digital platforms and applications that support freelance work also make it convenient for them to find clients, receive payments, and communicate with employers or customers directly.

  1. Freedom from Conventional Work Pressure

Permanent jobs often require high commitment and come with greater stress. In contrast, gig economy jobs allow students to choose projects or work based on their comfort and interests. They are also not bound by strict bosses or rigid workplace rules, giving them more freedom in their work.

  1. Skill Development and Work Experience

Participating in the gig economy not only helps students earn income but also develops valuable skills for their future. Some of the skills they can acquire include:

  • Communication and negotiation skills
  • Effective time management
  • Online marketing and sales skills
  • Entrepreneurship and creativity

Moreover, the work experience gained from the gig economy can be an added value to their resumes when applying for jobs after graduation.

  1. Difficulty in Securing Permanent Jobs

Competition in the job market is becoming more intense, especially for fresh graduates with limited work experience. As a result, many students choose the gig economy as an alternative to gain experience and earn income while looking for permanent jobs. Some even decide to make gig economy jobs their main career due to the higher earning potential compared to certain permanent jobs.

Challenges and Risks of the Gig Economy

Despite its many advantages, students should also be aware of the challenges and risks associated with the gig economy, such as:

  • Income instability – Earnings are not fixed and depend on the number of jobs obtained.
  • Lack of social protection – No benefits such as retirement savings (EPF), medical insurance, or paid leave like permanent employees.
  • High competition – Many individuals are joining the gig economy, leading to intense competition for jobs.

Therefore, students need to plan wisely and ensure they have financial savings and long-term strategies to face these challenges.

Conclusion

Overall, students are more attracted to the gig economy due to its flexibility, income opportunities, easy access through technology, and the potential to develop skills and work experience. Although there are challenges and risks, the gig economy remains an appealing choice for students adapting to the needs of the modern job market. With proper management, the gig economy can be a beneficial platform in shaping their future careers.
