5 CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER

By: Dr. Mazila binti Ghazali K.B,P.A

Every leader has his own way of leading a team or organization. Each leader has a different character that affects his style in developing his ability to lead others. However, almost everyone believes that effective leaders use the same principles in giving direction, inspiration, and guidance.

The positive things that a good leader creates are not only for the team he leads but for the organization as a whole. Teams that work under the direction of great leaders tend to feel happier, more productive, and have a sense of ownership in the workplace.

1. The leader is able to see first before others see

A leader is like a person standing on top of a mountain. He is able to see the surrounding situation more comprehensively when compared to his followers who are under the mountain. The leader not only sees the situation in the present but also the pattern in the future. This is what is meant by a leader who has a vision and mission. It is able to read movements from the past and present to make assumptions about what will happen in the future.

2. The leader becomes a role model for others

The best way to create high credibility is to set a good example in behavior. If you demand a lot from the team then as a leader you need to be prepared to set high standards for yourself. Set words and actions in a straight line to build trust and get the team to voluntarily follow the example you set. A leader needs to lead by example. Showing a good example of self-discipline is able to drag the team to be disciplined as well.

But if a leader is undisciplined, the followers will definitely be more undisciplined and will take advantage. A leader also needs to give freedom to the team to think independently to complete the work in their own way. Giving trust with high hopes and enthusiasm for the team to be more creative and innovative in completing various tasks. Trust from the team will be gained if the leader is wise in making the distribution of tasks and indirectly shows an example of credibility as a leader.

3. Leaders show integrity

A leader with integrity has good values in making decisions, behaving, and interacting with others. They can set a firm line between right and wrong and gain respect from others for their sincerity, principles, ethics and consistent attitude. Showing integrity through daily behavior will put you in a leadership position that earns loyalty, trust, and appreciation from team members.

4. The leader communicates effectively

The ability to communicate effectively, concisely, and thoughtfully is an extraordinary ability from a leader. Communication involves many things, not only about listening to what others have to say attentively and responding well, but also sharing quality information, asking thoughtful questions, being open to ideas and new things, clarifying misunderstandings between teams, and also communicate to inspire and motivate the team.

A great leader wants to spend time shaping the strengths, needs and priorities of the team so that they can move forward with high inspiration and self-motivation. This way will help you find the best way to motivate your team and feel appreciated.

5. The leader is open to new ideas

Every change that occurs cannot be avoided and must follow the latest pace. This matter needs to be understood by a leader. It is necessary for a leader to be willing to openly accept new ideas according to different perspectives. Each person has a unique and different perspective that will benefit the entire team.
