DEALING WITH OVERTHINKING

Author: Kemelia binti Omar K.B,P.A

Are you one of those people who overthink things? If so, you might be one of those overthinkers. Do not misunderstand the nature of the thinker. People who are thinkers tend to think about things that really need to be thought about. While people who think too much usually like to spend hours thinking about trivial things or things that are not necessarily useful.

Thinking things through before acting is a good thing, but if you overdo it, it can actually hurt yourself. Here are some ways to deal with "overthinking".

1. Think positive
You need to change the way you think about a situation or thing. For example, one day your friend doesn't say hello. In this situation, don't easily think that your friend doesn't like you. It is possible that your friend is in an alarming situation and needs to leave the place immediately. Therefore, try to change your way of thinking to positive things.

2. Focus on solutions
If you only think about the problem it will not help. However, if you think of a solution to the problem then it will be more helpful. Don't let your thoughts lead to problems that happen to you. Whenever possible, move on to thinking about the solution.

3. Stop being a perfectionist
Most people think too much because they feel that they are less intelligent, less neat, less good, and other things that are lacking. This situation will push you to think too much, because you believe that your work is not good enough.

Therefore, the right way to overcome excesses is to stop being a perfectionist. Sometimes, getting the job done on time is better than getting the job done too perfectly.

4. Start the day well
One of the ways to overcome "overthinking" is to start your day with happy things. For example, get up early, then water the plants or go straight to breakfast. This method is powerful enough to make the negative thoughts that may stick around at night disappear from your head.

5. Switch to happiness
Think about what makes you happy. For example, drawing, writing, playing music or a hobby that makes you forget about problems. In addition, you can also take a vacation to reduce excessive thinking.

6. Be grateful
As mentioned earlier, most people overthink because they feel that they are lacking. To overcome it, you should be grateful for what you have now. Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, it's better to focus on continuing to hone your skills to support your future career.

7. Focus on the present
When you overthink, you tend to think about bad things that will happen to you in the future. So, use your current time to focus on the present and do what you love.

8. Watch how you think
One important way to overcome overthinking is to pay attention to how you think. This is because overthinking is a habit. So, you need to be aware when you start doing it. When you feel doubtful, stressed or anxious, stop for a moment and look at the situation you are in. Then, see how you respond.

9. Change your view of fear
In many cases, overthinking happens because it is caused by fear. When you focus on the negative, it's easier for you to be unproductive. There is also fear that causes too much thinking which is very diverse. This may be due to past failures, fear of trying, or other events. Know that your failures are your vehicle for learning. That way, you can achieve better results in the future.

10. Accept your best efforts
The fear that causes overthinking is usually caused by the feeling that you are not enough. Whether it's like not having enough intelligence, dedication, or hard work. If this is the case, then one way to overcome the extremes of this is to embrace your best efforts.

Remember that success can depend on things that we cannot control. So, instill in yourself that you have done your best in your work. That way, your tendency to overthink will also decrease.
