Emotional Intelligence In Leadership

1. Self-awareness (Understanding Yourself): intelligence to know, understand, and evaluate oneself.
2. Self-management (Managing Yourself): intelligence in self-control, adaptability, as well as building self-confidence and optimism.
3. Social awareness (Understanding Others): intelligence in understanding others, tolerance, empathy, and service.
4. Social management (Managing Others): intelligence in managing and influencing others, dealing with conflicts, motivating, and inspiring.
In leading an organization, a leader must not only master technical and communication skills, but must also have emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is a soft skill required to recognize and understand the emotions of oneself and others.
Emotional intelligence is important because it describes how effectively a leader understands himself and expresses his attitude, as well as understanding others in social relationships.
Great leaders can not only control their own emotions, but can also influence others to do the same. Managing emotions helps to overcome work pressure will give more focus and constant innovation in work.
Positive feelings provide energy to generate optimism and trust. Therefore, every leader should be able to give positive emotions to their followers to build an effective organization.
Conversely, negative feelings have a bad impact and can affect team morale and emotions. The leader's job is to manage negative feelings such as disappointment, sadness, anger, hatred, and anxiety, so that they do not spread and affect team morale and become toxic that destroys and divides the team.
The quality of a leader's emotional intelligence can be measured from the four aspects above, namely how effectively they understand their own emotions, manage their own emotions, understand other people's emotions, and manage other people's emotions. With that intelligence, leaders will build a better work environment for everyone with various characters.
Leaders with high emotional intelligence will tend to apply transformative leadership. Emotional intelligence helps leaders to build an inclusive organization that is consistent with personality in leadership. A leader plays an important role to understand other individuals from various backgrounds including those who need special attention and help them achieve their organizational and personal goals together.
