Methods Of Managing Negative Thoughts

Written by : Madam Kemelia Omar

Negative thoughts are perceptions, expectations and descriptions of oneself, others and the environment as a whole followed by negative emotions that will adversely affect one’s behavior and health.

Individuals with negative thoughts often see only two categories of black or white. Every thing must do all things perfectly because if it is not perfect, it is a failure. For example, if I can’t get into the best class, it means I’m a useless person.

In addition, they also get use to  blame or criticize themselves and cannot forgive themselves for any mistakes. For example, I think I'm not good. I lack a lot. I'm not smart enough. I'm not good at talking. Negative individuals often complain a lot. They feel they are victims of the situation. They feel they are grumpy bosses, lazy friends, unhelpful siblings or irresponsible husbands. Granted some of the reasons given are acceptable, but if they offend everyone, chances are they are negative people.

Therefore, here are the methods you can use to manage your negative thoughts.

  1. Recognize the negative thoughts that arise      • As a first step, you need to identify and record existing negative thought patterns so that it is easier to get rid of them.
  2. Identify one's strengths                                • Look for the strengths you have in yourself so that the crisis you are experiencing can be dealt with immediately.
  3. Acceptance / satisfaction                               • You need to learn to accept your shortcomings and be content with anything that cannot be changed or handled.
  4. Share feelings                                              • You need to share with people you trust and be able to provide a more positive atmosphere such as counselors, family members and close friends.
  5. Healthy lifestyle                                           • Stress can be reduced when you exercise regularly and maintain a balanced diet.
