OPTIONAL CAREER

Author: Wan Azurani binti Wan Ahmad K.B,P.A

According to Super's theory of career development, individual career development stages are divided into five (5) stages. Starting with the 'Growth' stage (0-14 years), the 'Exploration' stage (15-24 years), the 'Consolidation' stage (25-44 years), the 'Maintenance' stage (45-64) and the 'Declination' stage ( 65 years and above).

Likewise in Malaysia, career exposure has been applied as early as childhood. The first person to disclose is the individual's parents or family. At the growth stage, when individuals are in primary school, teachers or school counselors are also responsible for providing exposure about careers in addition to parents.

At the primary school level, individuals tend to observe and be interested in individuals with jobs they see or among their immediate family. It is not surprising that the jobs or professions commonly mentioned by children are only focused on careers that are close to them.

Rising to adulthood, the 'exploration' stage, which is the upper secondary level up to the university level, the exposure to careers that are available especially in Malaysia is wider. While in upper secondary, individuals are given the option to choose their stream according to their interests, inclinations and academic achievements. These trends are the basis for career selection at the university level and then individuals will enter the path and career direction based on the academic field they study.

However, not everyone will stay in the career according to the course or path at the university level. Many parents are excited to determine the career direction of their children. In fact, many parents are excited to model their children to choose professional careers that are sometimes not preferred by the individual.

What exactly is the BEST 'CHOICE CAREER'? The answer is that there is no best career, but it is what career is most suitable, interesting, and gives satisfaction to the individual.
Therefore, for every individual, make the best choice so that the career you pursue is the best for yourself and can contribute to society and the country.
