Traps of the Past Prevent Person From Progressing Forward

Written by : Mr. Haniff bin Abdullah Hashim

Past events, often block one’s efforts to move forward. Many cling to the memories of the past. They think that if they move into the future, the individuals, memories, and moments of the past that are very significant to themselves will lapse. Many don’t want these things to go out of their minds, and let the past trap them for years to come. Even so much so that some have stated that he himself has died in the past, and now the only thing left is a soulless body. Otherwise, life is about a series of events that will always happen. So, take a step to look to the future by taking action in this day and time.

  1. Schedule thoughts to reminisce in the past - if the past has indeed allocated a long, long and uncertain time to reminisce to the past. Schedule your thoughts to remember in a specific time only. For example, only twice a day, that is at 10.00 am and 3.00 pm only for half an hour. At other times keep yourself busy with the work that should be done. Try to reduce the frequency of thinking about past events from week to week, from month to month and from year to year. Don't worry and get angry if it's not as planned, try again until you succeed and be creative in carrying out your daily routine.

  1. Make peace with the past - if there is an unfinished business between you and the past. Reconcile yourself with the past. This is for your own good. The past is not lost in the slightest without this reconciliation. Nmaun as an individual you are the loser for letting time pass in vain and affecting productivity. It can even lead to mental and physical health problems.

Close your eyes, inhale slowly, hold and exhale slowly. Find the quietest place, write down the date and time. Let the memories of the past be present in your mind, let it come in clearly. Then tell him that from then and now, you will be at peace with him. Letting it go is like releasing a gas balloon into the air, letting it fly higher and smaller out of sight and subsequently out of sight. Let’s also say you don’t care if, once in a while it comes to your mind. Tell yourself no matter how often it comes, you won’t care about it anymore or just glance at it at a glance without feeling.

The past is very important to be used as good lesson. But don't let yourself get caught up in the past. The best way to serve the past is to respond to it without emotion, take lessons from it and then enjoy life in the present. With full awareness, act to the best of your ability to increase the quality of emotions, thoughts and actions. At the very least live with the intention of benefiting others.
