What is Burnout?

Written by : Danial Fikhry Che Rosli

Basically, 'burnout' is defined as a condition where an individual experiences physical or psychological fatigue caused by the individual's work or professional life.

So, there are several signs that may indicate that you are experiencing "burnout". If you are currently in this phase, you need to see a counselor immediately and surely the counselor can help you face your problems.

1. Running to work, and wanting to go home as soon as you're there.

If you often feel worried and nervous every time you have to go out to work, you may be experiencing "burnout". You don't feel happy and often feel burdened by your work which makes you want to go straight home even though you have just arrived at work.

2. Having a feeling of emptiness when at work

This situation can occur because you do not have interest and enthusiasm in doing your work. If the work you do is not work you like and have passion in doing, then it will lead to a "burnout" situation because you don't want to do work you don't like.

3. Easily annoyed with team members or customers

Another way to see if you are in the "burnout" phase is when you start to feel irritated with colleagues or with customers. If your job involves your relationship with customers and you don't feel appropriate with the social relationships that need to be done, it can trigger a state of "burnout" for yourself. A bad social relationship between you and your co-workers can make you feel worse at work and can make your "burnout" worse.

4. Having the mindset that your work has no meaning or makes a difference

If you feel that your work is pointless and does not help your organization, it means that you can no longer find meaning in the work you do. You will begin to feel unmotivated in doing your work and you will no longer do your best in your work because you feel that your work is not important and the results will not change anything.

5. You are thinking of quitting your job, or changing roles

The most significant sign that shows that you are no longer motivated to work and experience "burnout" is when you often think of quitting your job or wanting to do another job. This situation will cause you to not focus in doing your work and you will no longer be enthusiastic about doing your work because you only think of quitting and doing other work. In conclusion, the issue of "burnout" is not a trivial issue and can be left alone.

The effects of "burnout" can disrupt the quality of life of individuals and affect their productivity. So, if you feel that you have signs of being in the "burnout" phase, please make an appointment with the counselors and together think of ways to overcome this problem.
